The Trynd Review by Billy Tate  7/17/11

On a warm Saturday evening in June, Adrienne & I were strolling down Jefferson Street for the last Artwalk of the month.  We'd just spent the last hour looking at exhibits in the Acadiana Center for the Arts when we noticed some particularly dark clouds gathering from the east.  We hadn't had a bite since earlier that morning and so decided it might be a good time to have dinner and avoid what looked to be a downpour.

We ambled down to Vermillion Street and chose to try The Trynd, one of the newest Italian restaurants in downtown Lafayette.  Located in an historic two story brick building behind the old Gordon Square Hotel, the restaurant features indoor and outdoor dining.  Because it was raining, however, our options were limited.  They were pretty busy at the time, so we chose to eat in the bar, where we could still see the street.

We were quickly seated and before long, our waitress, Marie, was helping us to navigate the menu.  After a few questions we settled on beef Carpaccio and crab cakes for appetizers.  The beef was very thinly sliced and presented as a salad with mushrooms, arugula and parmesan cheese drizzled with truffle oil.  The crab cakes were set atop a polenta cake and covered with a Creole mustard sauce.  I knew Adrienne would love the crab cakes but I could tell from her first bite that the combination with the polenta and sauce were really floating her boat.  I dug into my Carpaccio and initially was struck by how spicy the arugula was. The real payoff, though, lay in the combination of flavors between the beef and the rest of the salad.

While digging into our appetizers, Marie returned and after some more questioning we decided on our entrees.  Adrienne opted for the seafood ravioli and I selected the veal scaloppini.  Marie suggested the appropriate wines and before long both dishes, beautifully presented, were delivered before us.  The veal was delicious and quite tender but what really got me going wasNew Page 1 the gorgonzola stuffed tomatoes.  I'm not a big tomato guy, but this was just wonderful.  It also came with grilled asparagus which just completed the meal.  Adrienne's seafood ravioli looked like something out of a magazine.  It's stuffed with crabmeat and shrimp and covered in a garlic lemon butter sauce and Adrienne still talks about it at least once a week.  She's even talking about making her own pasta.

We were way too full to even consider a dessert but the items on the menu looked awfully enticing.  All in all, the topnotch food, excellent service, and unique atmosphere make for a highly satisfying dining experience in our book.  We highly recommend The Trynd to anyone visiting Lafayette.

Review of Prejean’s Restaurant by Adrienne Thibodeaux Tate

Years ago we would go to Prejeans at least 2-3 times a month. The food was consistent and awesome.

Today I can’t say this. The last few times we have been there both my husband and I have been totally disappointed with not only the service, but the food as well.

We decided to give them another chance, mainly because we had some friends from out of town who wanted to go there. We went for lunch, and afraid to try any of my regular items, I chose the omelet. (It was still early enough for the breakfast or lunch menu). Mine was very good.  In fact, each person that was there liked their food, with the exception of one, who's food really looked and tasted bad and did not eat theirs.

Though their food is not consistent, when it is good, it's very good.  The one item I have gotten there many times is the Seafood Gumbo...which is awesome!  I also love their homemade salad dressing.

Review of La Pagua Mexican Restaurant by Adrienne Thibodeaux Tate

Finally Lafayette has a Mexican Restaurant that I can honestly say the food is authentic, good and the service is awesome.

We heard about La Pagua, and though we have several Mexican Restaurants around the north end of Lafayette…and this is on the south end…if you love Mexican food it’s well worth your while to take the drive.

I always know a Mexican restaurant will be good by the chips and salsa…and these chips are handmade, light and so good…the salsa was perfect!

We have only eaten there once, but it’s on our list of places to go soon. I ordered the Beef Enchiladas dinner with Mexican rice, refried beans and sour cream…I also ordered the guacamole on the side….eating there reminded me so much of my favorite Mexican restaurant located in Austin…finally, as I said, we have a great Mexican restaurant here in Lafayette.

My husband ordered the Chilaquil which is crispy corn tortilles smothered in ranchero sauce covered with shredded chicken and your choice of 2 fried eggs or grilled steak. Served with refried beans and sour cream. He got the fried eggs. Oh my, we were so surprised at this meal.

So tasty…and so much food….we definitely did not leave there hungry!

Review of Fezzo’s by Adrienne Thibodeaux Tate

I have been to Fezzo’s many times and have never once been disappointed. The food is real, Cajun food and the service is awesome.

On this occasion I got one dozen raw oysters. This was in an R month, which is very important, in the month of October. The oysters were salty, fresh and oh so tasty! And clean…I need to add this because for those of you who do like raw oysters, clean ones are very important. They do have a special sauce they serve you, which is very good. Myself, I like to make my own sauce, and they were kind enough to give me a small bowl to do this in…along with everything I like…ketchup and lots of horseradish!

Then my husband and I ordered a southern classic…Hamburger Steak with grilled onions and their own brown gravy. It came with a salad and we ordered fried sweet potatoes on the side which came with honey and cinnamon sugar on the side.

We ate all of our food. It was so good. Though this visit we ordered the above from the menu…we have also eaten their fried shrimp which is so crispy and not oily at all. We love their po-boys as well.

So give them a try…I know you won’t be disappointed!

Review of Café Josephine by Adrienne Thibodeaux Tate

This is a gem located in the small town of Sunset, just 10 minutes from Magnolia Court and the Cottage.

We started off with each a Martini…we had heard about their Martinis from some friends of ours who had gone there. I honestly cannot remember the name of the Martini we got…but it was made with cantaloupe…wow..such flavor…remember though, it does have a kick!

I ordered the Jumbo Soft Shell Crab Dinner. Tempura battered soft shell crab fried golden brown, sitting on top of a grits cake and topped with Irene’s salsa. Oh my…the flavor…I love soft shelled crabs…but had never had them in a tempura batter….unique flavor that I loved!

My husband ordered the Out of the Woods. Deer sausage, grilled rabbit and quail served with grilled onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, sweet potato balls and warm tortillas. It too was very good and such a wonderful surprise to have something different on a menu!

Both dinners were served with a house salad. We tried their house dressing…which has a wonderful little kick.

To think a small town like Sunset has this restaurant…like I said earlier….a real gem!
